Breed & Life-stage Routines

A useful routine fits the dog in front of you. Begin with comfort, behavior and the task at hand rather than assuming that every dog of a breed—or every dog of an age—will respond in the same way.

Our starting point: cooperative paw care

The first guide in this collection focuses on getting comfortable with paw handling. It is a general handling guide, not a breed-specific protocol or a promise that every dog will progress on the same schedule.

Notice the whole interaction

A completed grooming task is not the same thing as a comfortable experience. Pay attention to tension, withdrawal and willingness to continue. A quiet pause can be more useful than finishing every step.

Let the starting point change

A different person, room or paw may call for an easier step. Record what was comfortable rather than treating one successful session as permission for every future procedure.

Check the care question first

If your question began with a change in the nose, use the nose guide to organize your observations. Handling practice does not replace assessment of a new physical problem.
